So you’ve spotted your competition or other local business up for an award. Your slightly jealous and a little intrigued but mostly you wouldn’t put yourself forward for them. It’s amazing how many business awards are out there. Maybe you have never thought to enter an Award. As the saying goes ‘you have to be in it to win it.’
There are a whole host of reasons to enter and the main one has to be the press coverage you will receive. This will open doors to potential investors, attract new staff and new clients from the credibility and kudos an award generates.
The entry process can be quite daunting collating the information, clear presentation and with a few forms to fill out. Some awards may also include an interview, which can be intimidating but remember this is your business that you are passionate about, so try so to show some this. The actual process also allows you to look at your achievements over the last few years and it is important to recognise and celebrate this.
Try to put yourself in the Judges shoes, they are looking for someone that stands out from the crowd and tells a story. Having judged for the British Hairdressing Business Awards you would expect some great creativity, but actually 90% of the entries are very similar especially when a PR agency has written it for them! I remember vividly opening up someone’s entry and before I read anything, it was clear to see the thought, care and time taken over the entry. Opening it up, I was allowed to have a sneak peak into their world and their passion for the job and industry shone out. Needless to say all four judges had this entry in their top 3 and the guy went on to win the title.
If announced as a finalist you can start to make some noise about it from then, and often you receive a logo. Try to enjoy your Awards Dinner and if possible, invite some of your team to feel part of the success. If you win, then SHOUT ABOUT IT and enjoy the recognition.
In a previous role, we entered the National Business Award for the Marketing Category for our re-branding We didn’t win, but we were so proud to have made it to the finals and be in the same presence as some other inspirational business leaders. It was a great night and we shared a table with another small business so we were cheering each other on.
