The worst-kept secret is now official sending the world’s media into a complete frenzy. Brands were not far behind on this too.
Listening is a basic skill of any Social Media Expert. Here at hype, we also have the radio on so we can hear breaking news and where there is a positive news story it’s great to be able to piggy-back off this. In the Royal Engagement case, we were able to link in our wedding stationery client, Wagtail Designs, and luxury hair extension brand, Remi Cachet, with these simple Instagrams.
We’re so excited for a Royal Wedding. Now which stationery design of ours do you think would suit #harryandmeghan? 💍👑👰🏼 Bespoke we think. #Repost @kensingtonroyal (@get_repost) ・・・ Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have appeared at a photo call at Kensington Palace on the day their engagement has been announced. #wedding #weddingstationery #savethedate #royalwedding
Our new hair icon? Hands up who is seeing her black long locks being THE new trend. 🙋♀️💇♀️ #hairinspo #meganmarkle #darkhair #longhair #princesshair 👑 #Repost @kensingtonroyal (@get_repost) ・・・ His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle are engaged to be married. The Prince of Wales made this announcement this morning: His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle. The wedding will take place in Spring 2018. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course. His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty, The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle’s parents. The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.
You will spot that in both instances, we have re-posted an official post giving the post authenticity and crediting the image correctly.
Quick reactions are key and EastEnders has to win this purely for the amount of work they did to quickly re-shoot a scene and edit it into the programme to go out last night.
Did you spot our majestic topical insert of THAT royal engagement from last night’s show?

Google Trending Stats do not show the full picture here. Just head to the newsagents to see the buzz in the papers and repeat online with lots more speculative content; but do a few simple social media searches and you will get an idea of how brands have used the s
tory for themselves.
Brands not closely related, have merely done a congratulations comment like Kurt Geiger which generated comments and 3.7k likes. Flick to their posts either side of this one and they only generated 752 and 344 likes.
To some, this might seem irrelevant, but with engagement being the key metric for social media it is essential to listen, react and engage ourselves, sharing newsworthy content to be relevant. Granted a ‘happy’ story we can all do with more of, but it also shows personality with your brand, that there is a person at the other end of the twitter account and that not everything is automated.
So turn on your radio, add some more searches to your social media and listen to what’s happening in the world to see how you too can work some social magic. Get in touch if you want to know more about how social media can help your business.
