Ah, October, the month when autumn is well and truly underway, Halloween is frightfully near, and the sound of jingle bells are getting louder as Christmas creeps closer. We know how things tend to slow down towards the end of the year, with the increasingly cold weather making it more and more difficult to get out of bed and put your thinking cap on. So, we’ve turned the heating up high in the office, shut out the cold, and started planning so that you don’t have to.
So, what does October have in stall for us this year?
Breast Cancer Awareness Month runs through October, and each year a great many people come together to show their support. The Breast Cancer Now organisation runs their “Wear it Pink” campaign on the 19th, which offers a great opportunity to get involved. Decorate the office, pull out your finest pink outfit and share a snap on social. Or, if you sell any pink-tastic products like our client, Remi Cachet does, set to promoting them, or go all out and offer a discount for the month.
It’s Fair Trade Month, which could be a great opportunity to shout about the Fair Trade products used in your company.
Schools break up for half term, and those of you with children will know that now is a good time to whip out the parenting funnies and show your sympathy (or excitement, depending on how well-behaved your kids are) for other mums and dads.
The month is getting colder with autumn now in full swing. Why not share some local events or ideas on what to do near you now that the weather is a little less forgiving? Don’t forget to tag in and use hashtags for local businesses to improve your reach.
As for awareness days, there are an abundance as per usual(!):
International Coffee Day – Monday 1st
There are tonnes of relatable coffee quotes ready to be found for caffeine addicts like ourselves.
Random Acts of Poetry Day – Wednesday 3rd
Do you have a favourite poem worth sharing, or is there a piece of poetry relating to your business or industry?
Improve Your Office Day – Thursday 4th
Go wild and throw up some new decorations, buy a new plant, or bring your pet in to brighten up the place.
World Smile Day – Friday 5th
This could be a good opportunity to share a snapshot of your team with their best beaming grins, and introduce them to your following.
Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day – Wednesday 10th
Who doesn’t have a favourite teddy? Snap a shot of it working hard in the office.
World Food Day – Tuesday 16th
We all know that social media, in particular Instagram, is awash with photos of people’s breakfasts, lunches and teas. Jump on the bandwagon and share a photo of your snack, remembering to use the hashtags #foodofinsta and #foodofinstagram for extra reach.
International Artists Day – Thursday 25th
Get all cultured and share an image of your favourite artist, or if you fancy yourself as a creative mastermind, share a piece of your own artwork.
Halloween – Wednesday 31st
If you are planning an event, be sure to invite the local press along to get involved in the fearsome fun, or send in your release after the event with eye-catching imagery.
If you were looking for something a little more comical, there are plenty of out-there days this month, ready to make you chuckle:
- 7th – Bathtub Day
- 9th – Moldy Cheese Day
- 14th – Be Bald and Free Day
- 21st – Count Your Buttons Day
- 30th – Haunted Refrigerator Night.
Now, as we’d said in our previous blog, avoid cluttering your streams with too many awareness days. If it’s not relevant to your business, don’t use it. Balance your content, ensure you stay on brand and aim to get your company values across. If you have events coming up, or new products coming out, shout about them! And remember, it’s not all just about social media, even things out by using one of these days for PR. Granted, you will need to think ahead to make sure you are in the publications in time, so a little extra planning will help.
Hopefully October looks a little less ominous now, and the gaps in your monthly plan will be a little easier to fill. However, if you’re still in need of help, and could do with a little hype magic, get in touch to see what we can do for you.
